There are no two ways around it: A lot of factors go into finding your next home. Young families, in particular, have some unique factors in their search criteria that might be different than young singles. Recently, our friends over at ApartmentList.com dug into the data to find what cities are the best for young families. Their analysis centered around the 4 factors that they identified as being important to families:
- Safety (35%): We ranked cities by the number of violent crimes and property crimes per 100,000 residents. Source: FBI statistics.
- Housing Cost (30%): To rank cities on housing costs, we calculated the percentage of the average income required to rent the average 2 bedroom apartment. Sources: Apartment List, American Community Survey
- School Quality (25%): Cities were ranked on high school graduation rates for public school districts based in that city. Comparing schools across different states can be challenging, but the high school graduation rate gives a good estimate of overall school quality. Source: Department of Education data.
- Child Friendliness (10%): Communities with a greater percentage of children tend to be more child friendly, so we scored cities based on the percentage of the population that’s under 18: Source: American Community Survey
ApartmentList.com evaluated over 500 cities and identified the top 100. Two Indiana cities made the top six, with Fishers coming in #1 and Carmel coming in #6. Here is an excerpt from the ApartmentList.com report on why Fishers is the best city in America for families:
"Fishers, IN: Fishers gives families a lot to love. Its rents are the most affordable of any city we looked at: the median rent of $950 translates to just 12.3% of the average annual income. It also has one of the 5 lowest crime rates. Add in a stellar school district and lots of children, and you get America’s best city for families."
This is huge news for the city of Fishers and Carmel! (Psst: It’s also something we’ve been saying for years.) If you’re looking in either market, we have the perfect community for you! We have two communities in Fishers: The District at Saxony and our newest community The Hamilton Luxury Apartment Homes and three communities in Carmel: One One Six, North Haven, and Legacy Towns and Flats. We’re ecstatic to be able to add to the awesomeness that is Fishers and Carmel both!
Here are the specifics on Fishers and Carmel’s rankings:
Fishers continues to explode with growth, and Carmel continues to set the bar for safety. Additionally, both invest a lot of time, energy, and money back into the community…so it comes as no surprise to us that these cities are recognized nationally as best-in-class. If your family is in the market for a new apartment home in either Fishers or Carmel, we’d love to be your home base! You can get started here!
